GHAJINI ENDS WELL | 2008's BIGGEST OPENER

Great ending

December 31, 2008 - 08:46 IST

My father once told me, the climax should be the highpoint of every film. A viewer carries home, besides other things, the penultimate moments of a film. As the curtain falls on 2008, I can't think of a more appropriate comparison for the year 2008 that will soon be considered a 'Flashback'.

The year 2008 would be remembered for so many things, good and bad, positive and negative, but, thankfully, it closes today with a bang. The frown on our faces is replaced by smiles. The laugh lines on our faces are pretty evident, what with RAB NE BANA DI JODI and GHAJINI elevating the mood [and the balance sheet] of the film industry. Moviegoers are back and how!

Every year teaches you something and the year 2008 has taught the industry several lessons…

  • The economics have to be kept in check if everyone has to survive. The correction in prices [actors' fees, production costs, selling prices] is already taking place. Besides, most film-makers are thinking out of the box, daring to push the envelope further. So expect some great stuff in 2009 and 2010.

  • The success of medium-budget and low-cost films indicates that moviegoers are ready to patronise films without stars.

  • The corporates are taking stock of the situation currently and it goes as a request that they shouldn't get into an overzealous mood and acquire films at artificial/inflated prices.

  • The actors have decided to cut down on their fees [most of them have been cut to size by the flops they delivered; they aren't doing any favour]. Star remuneration amounts to 50% - 60% of a film's budget and if this aspect is controlled, the economics would be in check.

So let's begin 2009 with optimism. Let's hope and pray that the year ahead brings prosperity to an industry that is just out of the Intensive Care Unit. Goodbye 2008, welcome 2009!

Now GHAJINI. Armed with a solid, record-breaking 4-day weekend of approx. Rs. 42 cr. nett [approx. Rs. 70 cr. gross], the film opened to a terrific response on Monday, which is an acid test for all movies, big or small. The film has had an extensive release in the domestic market and a fall in business from Monday onwards was imminent.

But GHAJINI sprang a pleasant surprise, for the Monday figures were heartening [70% + at several screens], which only goes to prove that a good film works on all days. Its super-success is a tight slap on the faces of several naysayers who had the gall to predict that action films are an absolute no-no in today's times.

JUMBO got sidelined completely. The GHAJINI wave was so omnipotent that not one person enquired about how this animation film was faring. JUMBO is a sweet film, but GHAJINI was too strong an opposition for it to handle.

GHAJINI BLOCKBUSTER OVERSEAS

Love stories and musicals rule the roost in the international markets, while action films are a strict no-no. But GHAJINI has fetched an overwhelming start in America and Australia and despite a 15 certificate, is impressive in U.K.... The combined total of RAB NE BANA DI JODI from U.K., U.S.A. and Australia, after 17 days, is approx. Rs. 17.75 crores.

TRAINING VIDEO OF AAMIR's 8 PACK BODY

Big Cinemas' staff sports Aamir Khan's Ghajini look

The staff of Big Cinemas is taking idol (hero) worship to a new height altogether. Why you ask? Well, the reason is pretty apparent. Just recently, about 100 employees at the Big Cinemas chain decided to go under the barber's scissors to have their locks shaved, thus making them an exact replica (at least the head) of Aamir from his soon to be released film Ghajini.

Ghajini as we all know is a much anticipated release this Christmas. And after the recent terror attacks, people are looking forward for an entertaining film that will lure them back to the cinema halls.

Tushar Dingra -COO of BIG Cinemas says, "We are very excited to be gearing up for what promises to be a huge release and are proud to be part of such a prestigious opportunity. The film's theme and Aamir's look have captured public imagination and we are no exception, except that we have taken the inspiration to a whole new level."

Well by the looks of it, Aamir sure seems to have a massive fan following not just among theatre patrons but even theatre employees.

Aamir Khan Creates Blast On The Sets Of Sa Re Ga Ma Pa Challenge 2009

Aamir Khan is sheer genius. No wonder the biggest of music directors on Zee Tv’s premium show “Sa Re Ga Ma Pa” can not stop gushing about one of the finest actors of all times. Aamir Khan singing “Aati Kya Khandala” along with the chulbuli contestant while the felicity with which he plays the drums on “Papa Kehte Hain” has to be seen to be believed. It is a very special episode that will entertain you completely.

Aamir Khan features in the Dec issue of men's magazine GQ

How will you react if you were offered a date with someone who is perfection personified! Well, we are tad sure of the fact that the moment we utter the 'P' of perfection, the one and only name that pops up in everyone's mind is that of Aamir Khan - better known as Bollywood's Mr. Perfectionist! Well, as his much-awaited film Ghajini is ready to hit the theatres this month, Aamir is bound to be all over the place for sure, and one of the early-birds is the world-famous lifestyle magazine 'GQ' that has got none other than Aamir Khan on the cover of its latest edition!

All that you have to do is pick up the recent issue of the world-famous lifestyle magazine 'GQ' which has got none other than Aamir Khan on the cover! 'If looks could kill...then we have a Killer in Aamir', who is all set to take the whole of not just Bollywood, but the whole universe ...all in one go with his forthcoming release Ghajini

This edition of GQ has got none other than Bollywood's very own 'Midas Man' Karan Johar doing the honours of being the Contributing Editor of this mag.

The editor of this mag says, "Aamir Khan doesn't appear on many magazine covers. The fact that he has chosen to work with GQ is a testament to the magazine's 50-year old reputation as a publication featuring and read by intelligent, successful men. What makes the cover story even more special is the fact that Karan Johar, allegedly a member of a rival camp in the film industry, has interviewed Khan - for the first time. The result is an entertaining, candid conversation that even Bollywood skeptics would find engaging."

We just couldn't argue on that!
